Finding Balance
The Conundrum of Balance The concept of balance is extremely confusing, filled with advice from gurus who spent decades forgoing balance to achieve career success, yet now stress its importance.
This creates a perplexing situation for those of us trying to build our careers, nurture our families, and basically do it all.
My Journey to Finding Balance I'm no stranger to the challenge of finding balance. My entrepreneurial journey began while I was in a full-time role as a young executive at 3M, and entering fatherhood with the arrival of twins. Those first ten years were a whirlwind of prioritizing business building, often at the expense of other life aspects.
I found myself letting life happen to me, consistently falling short of my goals in nearly every other domain.
Defining Balance The concept of balance is also confusing because the optimal balance is different for each of us, at different times in life.
With that in mind, I’ll define it as best I can generally:
Balance means caring for your physical and mental well-being through mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and sleep; engaging in meaningful work alongside people you value; ensuring financial stability; and making room for deep connections with family and friends, alongside time for hobbies and play.
Within that definition, there are three main areas we can look at to find balance for ourselves:
What is my long-term plan?
What season am I in?
Where and how can I create life integration?
Strategic, Long-Term Approach
I think about these lines or quote them at least once a month now:
"Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where –
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn't matter which way you go.
Alice: ...so long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough."
Without a clear direction of where we’re going, life will force one upon us. The way to counter this is regular, strategic, personal planning.
Having a north star is required to live whatever balance you seek. Without it you’re just letting life happen to you, and you won’t likely enjoy where it takes you.
The Seasons of Life Recognizing life's seasons is crucial, understanding that our time and energy will shift among areas depending on our current priorities. Expecting a static balance is unrealistic and sets us up for frustration.
Navigating these seasons effectively keeps us aligned with our goals, even as we pivot and adapt.
Life Integration
Integrating life's components is a powerful way to get more out of life. Where in my life can I kill two birds with one stone? Think of this regularly when making plans.
Life Integration Examples
Businesses aligned with passions
Hobbies as side-gigs or potential businesses
Active hobbies for exercise
Involving your kids in your business endeavors
A Health-First Mentality
Another crucial aspect of achieving balance is adopting a health-first approach in all aspects of life. Recognizing the limited hours in each day and my desire to pursue active interests well into the future, I've realized the importance of maintaining high energy levels to accomplish my goals and present my best self in all areas, especially at work.
To this end, my health-first strategy includes several key practices:
Minimizing Recovery-Hindering Substances: I've committed to not consuming any food or drugs, including alcohol, that significantly extend recovery times. For 2024, I've taken a pledge to abstain from alcohol, and I keep my intake of starches and sugars exceptionally low. This decision stems from an understanding of how these substances can impact my physical and mental performance, delaying my recovery and affecting my productivity.
Prioritizing Sleep: Sleep is non-negotiable for me. I monitor my sleep meticulously, aiming to improve its quality consistently. While there are social events worth sacrificing sleep for, they are exceptions rather than the rule, carefully planned to fit within a week that is otherwise marked by sleep consistency. This discipline around sleep is not just about quantity but ensuring the rest I get genuinely restores me, allowing me to face each day with renewed vigor.
Minimizing Energy Draining Activities and People: One benefit of years of hard work is the luxury of engaging in work that I love, with people that I love. This allows me to work hard and get paid well doing things that give me energy, as opposed to taking it away. The same thing with people. I ran up to 10 fitness studios in my first decade as an entrepreneur and spent my fair share of time with toxic people. I now have the luxury, through years of work, to not have to deal with these kinds of people anymore.
The concept of balance is highly personal and can be misleading if not defined properly. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, I advocate for a more individualized strategy: start by envisioning the life you wish to lead and the achievements you aim for. Then, tailor your lifestyle to facilitate these ambitions.
This personalized approach demands discipline, readiness to make sacrifices, and the courage to tackle challenges head-on. Yet, it is these very elements that could unlock the door to a truly satisfying and joyous life.
A Personal Journey Balance is a personal and evolving journey. It's about defining what you want your life to look like, then making disciplined choices and sacrifices to realize that vision. This path might not be easy, but it's perhaps the most rewarding pursuit towards a fulfilling life.
Action Reflect on what balance means to you and consider how strategic planning, life integration, and a health-first approach can guide you toward achieving your version of a balanced, fulfilling life.
Talk to you next week,
Mike
