Wellness Tip
Have you heard of workout snacks? Probably not unless you follow a bunch of fitness creators like I do, but they’re a hot topic right now.
What are they? Exercise snacks are short, like as little as 1-minute, high intensity workouts that you do throughout the day.
Why are they beneficial? Anything to move more throughout the day is good - walking, pacing, exercising, fidgeting - anything.
The primary benefit of exercise snacks is they add more movement throughout the day.
They also help in other ways:
Great way to breakup the day - in between meetings, a 60 second exercise snack can totally recharge you and prep your brain and body for the next thing
They add up to more fitness - Squeezing in 10 1-minute workouts throughout the day will substantially improve your fitness over a few months.
Blood sugar management - One 1-minute workout post-eating has been shown to regulate blood sugar as well as going for a walk.
Mental acuity and energy - Breaking up your days with movement increases energy, focus and clarity.
Here’s a few easy examples of a 1-minute exercise snack:
Air squats
Pushups
Situps
Lunges
Burpees
Any 2 movement combination of the above
Give them a try this week in between meetings and let me know how you feel.

What unlimited skills are you developing? Link
Have you heard of The Growth Mindset? I just assumed it was a vague concept, but recently learned it’s an actual field of study and discipline with hard data behind it.
Growth Mindset:
A growth mindset is a belief that skills, abilities, and knowledge can be developed with effort and persistence. This concept was popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, and drives home the fact that the challenges and obstacles we face are our chances to grow and learn.
One of the best authors on this concept is Ryan Halliday, author of The Obstacle is the Way, among other great books.
To illustrate this concept here are some comparisons between a fixed and growth mindset:
Fixed | Growth |
|---|---|
Avoids Challenges: Steers clear of challenges to avoid failure. | Embraces Challenges: Sees challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than as threats. |
Persistence: Demonstrates resilience and persistence in the face of setbacks. | Gives Up Easily: Tends to give up in the face of obstacles. |
Sees Effort as Useless: Believes that effort does not change one's abilities. | Effort: Believes that effort and hard work are the paths to mastery and success. |
Ignores Feedback: Often disregards constructive criticism. | Learning from Feedback: Welcomes feedback and constructive criticism as tools for improvement. |
Feels Threatened by Others' Success: May feel jealous or threatened by the success of others. | |
Celebrates Others' Success: Finds inspiration and lessons in the success of others. |
If you’re reading this, you probably subscribe to the growth mindset already, but read the above and ask yourself - do I follow this 100% of the time?
I think if we’re honest, the answer is no.
When we’re at our best we probably exude a growth mindset, but when we’re scared, tired, uncertain, or in our darker moments, we live in scarcity and a fixed mindset.
There are infinite tactics to bring yourself into an abundant, or growth mindset, but for today I’ll call out awareness as the first step.
When you’re going about your day, even today, monitor yourself, and be aware when you’re falling into a fixed mindset.
That may show up in very small ways:
-Avoiding a social engagement in favor of sitting on your couch
-Avoiding doing a bit of work on the weekend because you know you can get to it next week
-Skipping a workout because one workout won’t affect your fitness all that much
-Thinking negatively about a friend who’s celebrating something or putting their thoughts out there on social media
Awareness is the first step, then we move into abundance.
Talk to you next week,
Mike
