Have you been watching the Olympics?
I have and it’s bee AWESOME. I’m decidedly a non-sports watcher, yet every time the summer olympics comes around I get engrossed in the competitions, the backstories of these amazing athletes who perservere to achieve victory, and those who spend their whole lives working towards this one event to see it slip through their fingers.
It’s the ultimate view into the greatnesss of the human spirit. What can happen when you combine passion, talent, and absolute focus and discipline towards a singular goal.
Watching athletes is also a great way to get inspired to achieve our own goals - in physical and mental endeavors.
We often overthink our own lives when it comes to achieving our goals, when if we break them down into simply the long-term vision we’re creating for ourselves, the goals we must accomplish along the way to get there, and the daily and weekly activities to meet those goals; reaching our long-term visions become simplified and more attainable.
In sports it couldn’t be more simple:
Long-term Vision: Become an olympic champion
Quarterly Goals: Reduce split time 1 second
Weekly measurable: 100% compliance to training plan
Within that overall vision, goal, and measurable framework there may be more goals to stay on track - I typically recommend 3-7, but the above follows a simple approach of clarifying the long-term objective, breaking it down into goals within a discrete time period, and then daily or weekly activities that i know will get me towards those goals if I simply follow them.
This framework applies to all aspect of life.
In business this is standard, but in the rest of life humans tend to keep things vague and let things to chance - which yields worse results in the long-run.
Here are a few simple examples
Long-term Vision | Have a happy, communicative marriage | Be healthy enough to ski all weekend with my kids | |
|---|---|---|---|
Quarterly Goal | Improve our direct communication regarding administrative family obligations | Improve bodyfat % to <12% | |
Weekly measurable | Hold a 45 minute meeting per week to discuss issues | Measure food 3 days each week to calibrate nutritional intake |
Anything you desire - can be broken down into bite-sized chunks.
What is your long-term vision? What are some goals within a reasonable time period to keep you on track? What daily or weekly activities will help you reach those goals.
This framework is one of the most powerful things humans can use.
When thinking about your goals, think according to this framework.
If you don’t believe me, try to prove me wrong :)
Talk to you next week,
Mike
